Giant Stick Insect ( a little worse for wear)

Eurycnema goliath

Clearly, it had been a hard day for this Goliath.  See the whites of his eyes showing?  A trip through my laundry would intimidate even a sturdier creature than this crunchy chap.  Though what he was doing there, I can’t imagine.

Ack – second on my most disliked list (after Turkeys!) are stick insects. They really give me the creeps. On the same farm (as the Turkey incident) – I was going in between two wires on a fence (you know, push a wire down then somehow climb through) and as I was doing so, I looked at the wire in front of me – and there was THE most enormous stick insect you’ve ever seen! Did I scream?? My poor Aunt thought something really terrible had happened and was none too happy when she learnt it was just a stick insect that had caused the upheaval.

Hee hee. The joyful memories of being 7. 🙂

  2. “Just a stick insect?”

You’ll never be scorned for showing a horror of them here. You may not have noticed a complete lack of sympathy in my post for the fate of this one, but they are almost top of my list of things to avoid.

Those giant grasshoppers would, I think, have to come first…

I tried to find you a picture of a NZ giant weta – check out this link and scroll down (but beware, there are loads of creepy crawly horribles here!).
